A new study by Dr. Berta Cava-Cami et al was selected as an Editor’s Choice in Molecular Human Reproduction! This study investigated whether adding the oocyte-secreted factor pro-cumulin to human biphasic IVM culture influences the transcriptome of oocytes and cumulus cells. Pro-cumulin promoted cumulus cell expansion and proliferation, while suppressing luteinization, steroidogenesis, and apoptosis pathways, and also modulated key pathways in immature and partially denuded oocytes, restoring a more normal transcriptomic profile at maturation. These findings suggest that pro-cumulin may enhance developmental competence in IVM, warranting further proteomic and embryological evaluation.
